Deformation of geometry and bifurcation of vortex rings
We construct a smooth family of Hamiltonian systems, together with a family
of group symmetries and momentum maps, for the dynamics of point vortices on
surfaces parametrized by the curvature of the surface. Equivariant bifurcations
in this family are characterized, whence the stability of the Thomson heptagon
is deduced without recourse to the Birkhoff normal form, which has hitherto
been a necessary tool.Comment: 26 page
All-optical measurement of the hot electron sheath driving laser ion acceleration from thin foils
We present experimental results from an all-optical diagnostic method to directly measure the evolution of the hot-electron distribution driving the acceleration of ions from thin foils using high-intensity lasers. Central parameters of laser ion acceleration such as the hot-electron density, the temperature distribution and the conversion efficiency from laser pulse energy into hot electrons become comprehensively accessible with this technique.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) (contract number TR18)Germany. Polyphyly of non-bioluminescent Vibrio fischeri sharing a lux-locus deletion
available in PMC 2013 May 16This study reports the first description and molecular characterization of naturally occurring, non-bioluminescent strains of Vibrio fischeri. These ‘dark’V. fischeri strains remained non-bioluminescent even after treatment with both autoinducer and aldehyde, substrate additions that typically maximize light production in dim strains of luminous bacteria. Surprisingly, the entire lux locus (eight genes) was absent in over 97% of these dark V. fischeri strains. Although these strains were all collected from a Massachusetts (USA) estuary in 2007, phylogenetic reconstructions allowed us to reject the hypothesis that these newly described non-bioluminescent strains exhibit monophyly within the V. fischeri clade. These dark strains exhibited a competitive disadvantage against native bioluminescent strains when colonizing the light organ of the model V. fischeri host, the Hawaiian bobtail squid Euprymna scolopes. Significantly, we believe that the data collected in this study may suggest the first observation of a functional, parallel locus-deletion event among independent lineages of a non-pathogenic bacterial species.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (NIH Molecular Biosciences (5T32GM007215-35))National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (NIH Microbes in Health and Disease, training grant (2T32AI055397-07))Gordon and Betty Moore FoundationBroad Institute of MIT and Harvard (SPARC programme)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (NSF IOS 0841507)National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (NIH R01 RR12294)National Science Foundation (U.S.) (NSF Microbial Systems in the Biosphere programme)Woods Hole Center for Oceans & Human Healt
A cascaded laser acceleration scheme for the generation of spectrally controlled proton beams
We present a novel, cascaded acceleration scheme for the generation of spectrally controlled ion beams using a laser-based accelerator in a 'double-stage' setup. An MeV proton beam produced during a relativistic laser–plasma interaction on a thin foil target is spectrally shaped by a secondary laser–plasma interaction on a separate foil, reliably creating well-separated quasi-monoenergetic features in the energy spectrum. The observed modulations are fully explained by a one-dimensional (1D) model supported by numerical simulations. These findings demonstrate that laser acceleration can, in principle, be applied in an additive manner.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG contract no. Compact Cryogenic Source of Periodic Hydrogen and Argon Droplet Beams for Relativistic Laser-Plasma Generation
We present a cryogenic source of periodic streams of micrometer-sized
hydrogen and argon droplets as ideal mass-limited target systems for
fundamental intense laser-driven plasma applications. The highly compact design
combined with a high temporal and spatial droplet stability makes our injector
ideally suited for experiments using state-of-the-art high-power lasers in
which a precise synchronization between the laser pulses and the droplets is
mandatory. We show this by irradiating argon droplets with multi-Terawatt
pulses.Comment: To be published in Review of Scientific Instrument
Point vortices on the sphere: a case with opposite vorticities
We study systems formed of 2N point vortices on a sphere with N vortices of
strength +1 and N vortices of strength -1. In this case, the Hamiltonian is
conserved by the symmetry which exchanges the positive vortices with the
negative vortices. We prove the existence of some fixed and relative
equilibria, and then study their stability with the ``Energy Momentum Method''.
Most of the results obtained are nonlinear stability results. To end, some
bifurcations are described.Comment: 35 pages, 9 figure
Prokaryote genome fluidity is dependent on effective population size
Many prokaryote species are known to have fluid genomes, with different strains varying markedly in accessory gene content through the combined action of gene loss, gene gain via lateral transfer, as well as gene duplication. However, the evolutionary forces determining genome fluidity are not yet well understood. We here for the first time systematically analyse the degree to which this distinctive genomic feature differs between bacterial species. We find that genome fluidity is positively correlated with synonymous nucleotide diversity of the core genome, a measure of effective population size Ne. No effects of genome size, phylogeny or homologous recombination rate on genome fluidity were found. Our findings are consistent with a scenario where accessory gene content turnover is for a large part dictated by neutral evolution
Ocular involvement of sars-cov-2 in a polish cohort of covid-19-positive patients
The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 responsible for the current human COVID-19 pandemic has shown tropism toward different organs with variable efficiency, eyes included. The purpose of this study has been to investigate the presence of detectable SARS-CoV-2 infection in ocular swabs in patients affected by COVID-19. A consecutive series of 74 COVID-19-positive patients (age 21–89) were enrolled at two Polish COVID-19 hospitals for 4 months and were characterized by PCR for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in nasopharyngeal (NP) and ocular swabs, while their respiratory and ocular symptoms were noted. Almost 50% of them presented with severe/crit-ical respiratory involvement, and some degree of eye disease. No tight correlation was observed between the presence of ocular and respiratory symptoms. Three male patients presenting with severe/critical lung disease tested positive in ocular swab, however with mild/moderate ocular symptoms. In conclusion, our study lends further support to the view that overt ocular infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is not such a frequent occurrence
Spectral shaping of laser generated proton beams
The rapid progress in the field of laser particle acceleration has stimulated a debate about the promising perspectives of laser based ion beam sources. For a long time, the beams produced exhibited quasi-thermal spectra. Recent proof-of-principle experiments demonstrated that ion beams with narrow energy distribution can be generated from special target geometries. However, the achieved spectra were strongly limited in terms of monochromacity and reproducibility. We show that microstructured targets can be used to reliably produce protons with monoenergetic spectra above 2 MeV with less than 10% energy spread. Detailed investigations of the effects of laser ablation on the target resulted in a significant improvement of the reproducibility. Based on statistical analysis, we derive a scaling law between proton peak position and laser energy, underlining the suitability of this method for future applications. Both the quality of the spectra and the scaling law are well reproduced by numerical simulations
